What are e-cigarettes?
What is it?
Most people use e-cigs to help them quit smoking cigarettes, while others use them in addition to cigarettes. I personally have used them as an aid to quit smoking—very successfully I might add.
How does it work?
Most e-cigs are made up of three parts: a lithium ion battery, an atomizer and a cartridge. The cartridge is filled with something called e-liquid or e-juice. The e-cigarette’s battery heats up the atomizer, which turns the e-liquid into vapor. To use this device you press a small button while you inhale and your mouth fills up with a flavored vapor. As you inhale the vapor you get the same kind of “throat hit” you would get by inhaling smoke from a cigarette;as you exhale you are able to see and feel the vapor leaving your mouth—just like smoking. This process is known as “vaping.”
How is it better than smoking?
The difference between smoking and vaping is the e-cig contains no tobacco and none of the other 3000+ harmful chemicals known to cause cancer and countless other health problems. An e-cig’s vapor also has no harmful second-hand smoke, and no disgusting smell (it actually smells quite nice). There is no tight chest, smoker’s cough or shortness of breath that goes along with it, like with a traditional cigarette. Vaping also costs way less than smoking—I have saved about $150 per month.
How does this help with the smoking addiction?
Smokers are addicted to the nicotine in cigarettes. So most e-liquids contain varying degrees of nicotine to help a smoker slowly cut down until, eventually they can quit the nicotine all together. When you first start vaping, you use e-liquids with a higher degree of nicotine and slowly work your way to lower doses. In a very short time an e-cig user can cut the nicotine to almost zero. Once you are vaping on zero nicotine e-liquid, you have beaten the addiction and can put your e-cig away for good. Or, like many of us, if you still enjoy the flavors, social aspect and relaxation of using your e-cig, vape on!
